Moon Wisdom: New Moon in Aquarius

Our resident astrologer, She, the shaman shares:

The new moon is the start of the monthly lunar cycle.  New Moons are always a congruent time for intention and energy.  This month’s new moon happens on Friday, 24 January at 4:44p EST in the zodiac sign of Aquarius (at 4 degrees), the sign of the revolutionary. The moon itself represents our emotional natures, feelings and our unconscious.

This New Moon is a chance to download incredible ideas and set focused intentions as we are thrust into the energy of 2020. From a metaphysical standpoint, it is said that the three days before and after the New Moon are the most potent opportunities to work with its energies. That being said, the first new moon of the year is fully activating us into the energy of 2020 as it has been making contact with THE defining astro event of this year – the Saturn / Pluto conjunction happening in the sign of Capricorn, just before coming new today in Aquarius. Additionally, and notably, the Moon is also making a hard angle to Uranus, the Great Awakener. The alignments of these three distant planets being made with our local Moon will make the energy of these planets more tangible and accessible in our lives.

Whilst aspecting to Pluto (the planet of subconscious forces, transformation & power), this lunar event may be felt as an eruption of repressed feelings or submerged power, making it a potent time for self-knowing and depth-charged dialogue. Additionally, whilst aspecting to Saturn (the planet of structure, responsibility & limitation), it gives us an excellent, pragmatic resource for expedient action and self-mastery.  The hard angle with Uranus (the planet of forward-looking sudden change) asks us to stay flexible, and be ready to brace for a sudden problem or course change.

Each zodiac sign will feel these aspects differently depending on the area of life in which they fall in your natal chart. To understand how significant this moon will be for you, personally, start by looking for any planets in your natal chart near 4 degrees of Aquarius. It will be especially impactful for those with personal planet (Sun through Mars) placements at or near this degree. For how the contact with Saturn & Pluto will affect you, refer to Capricorn in your natal chart; for the hard angle with Uranus; refer to Taurus in your natal chart.

New Moon and Chinese Medicine
This new moon also ushers in the Chinese New Year on January 25. In Chinese Astrology, 2021 is the year of the metal Rat. The Rat is the first sign from the 12 animals cycle of the Chinese Astrology, and for this reason, 2020 is considered a year of new beginnings and renewals. The kick-off to the metal Rat year aligns nicely with the New moon as the Chinese New Year portends is that it is going to be a strong, prosperous, and lucky year for almost all signs. Everyone will show determination regarding their goals, aspirations, and even their hobbies.

According to Dr. Melissa Laborsky of Indy Healing Center, “Every lunar new year (the first new moon of the calendar year, aka Chinese New Year) we welcome a new animal and element. This dynamic combination influences all aspects of our daily life, even the economy, politics and our environment. The metal element, specifically, shares the frequency of our Lung/Large Intestine. These bodily systems are about sorting, refining, letting go of what we no longer need so we can allow our spirit to SHINE!”

The Moon and Your Cycle
As women, of course, I’m sure we’ve all experienced at one time or another the phenomenon of our monthly menstrual cycle lining up with the moon. Scientific research has documented that the moon rules the flow of fluids (ocean tides + individual body fluids). The timing of the menstrual cycle, the fertility cycle, and labor also follows the moon-dominated tides of the ocean. Environmental cues such as light, the moon, and the tides play a documented role in regulating women’s menstrual cycles and fertility.

New York Times best-selling author and women’s health expert, Dr Christiane Northrup says, “Even in modern society, where we are cut off from the rhythms of nature, the cycle of ovulation is influenced by the moon.” During the new moon ovulation and conception rates are decreased overall, and an increased number of women start their menstrual bleeding.  The week leading up to our menses is known as the luteal phase. This phase, from the ovulation to the onset of menstruation is when women are most in tune with their inner knowing.”

“Studies have shown women’s dreams are more frequent and often more vivid during the premenstrual and menstrual phases of their cycles.”  Dr. Northrup asserts, “We have access to parts of our often unconscious selves that are less available to us at all other times of the month. In fact, it has been shown experimentally that the right hemisphere of the brain—the part associated with intuitive knowing—becomes more active premenstrually, while the left hemisphere becomes less active.  Interestingly enough, communication between the two hemispheres may be increased as well. The premenstrual phase is, therefore, a time when we have greater access to our magic—our ability to recognize and transform the more difficult and painful areas of our lives.

Premenstrually, we are quite naturally more in tune with what is most meaningful in our lives. We’re more apt to cry—but our tears are always related to something that holds meaning for us. Years of personal and clinical experience have taught me that the painful or uncomfortable issues that arise premenstrually are always real and must be addressed.”

Tapping into the innate wisdom of our female body and responding to its unique needs is a huge act of personal care. Working with the moon creates a good foundation to cultivating harmony in our lives at the energetic, hormonal and spiritual levels.
